Abstract:

The point features represent mileposts, road crossings, and the trail's highest point on the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail in the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park in northern Virginia. Miscellaneous other points of interest that are signposted on the trail are also included in this dataset. Attributes include elevation above sea level in feet and meters, as well as some other information, such as time mapped.

Purpose:

This is a data layer to be used for creating maps, graphs, and similar documents that serve as a reference to users of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park.

Supplemental_Information:

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority already carried out the mapping of elevations (at mile and half-mile markers only) on the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail in early June 2001. However, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, realizing the limitations of GPS technology as it existed at the time, intended to repeat the mapping of elevations in the future after GPS technology advances. This dataset is the result of this repeated mapping of elevations. The GPS device used was a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, and the elevations were mapped between November 12, 2012 and April 4, 2013.

The "altitude" attribute contains the feature's elevation above sea level in feet, while the "InMeters" attribute holds the same elevation in meters. The "City" attribute was generated automatically while exporting the data to a shapefile from the GPS device, and was not deleted in case the need arises to fill in this field in the future. The x_proj and y_proj fields in the attribute table contain the same information (degrees of longitude and latitude) as the Longitude and Latitude fields, respectively, because no projection was specified when exporting the data to a shapefile, and the dataset was originally unprojected. The "IsHighest" attribute is the subtype field showing the type of the feature, the subtypes being as follows: 0 = other feature 1 = trail's highest point 2 = milepost 3 = road crossing. The attribute's name is due to the fact that originally, only two subtypes (1 for trail's highest point and 0 for all other points) were envisioned. The "ident" attribute holds the feature's name, while the "type" attribute was generated automatically when the data was exported from the GPS device; possible values are waypoint, track, and route, but in this dataset all features are waypoints. The criteria for inclusion of features in the dataset are as follows: All mile and half-mile markers on the trail are "mileposts." Road crossings are locations where the trail intersects those thoroughfares that are signposted as such. The trail's highest point was, at the time of mapping, not signposted; rather, its location was identified by Dmitriy Tarasov in parallel with the mapping of the elevations of other features. "Other" features are any features that are signposted on the trail but do not fit into the other three categories. All features except the trail's highest point were signposted on the trail at the time of mapping.
